Love is complicated, but no more so than the variations found in the major arcana card “The Lovers”.

  • In older decks the card showed a young man having to chose between two women with cupid hovering above him, aiming his dart.

  • This could also indicate a matchmaker, as in many cultures young people were and are introduced with the consent of their families (culture, religion and social status being given high priority). Love is expected to develop with time, familiarity and tolerance. Personal growth and respect within the relationship, instead of a fantasy where everything remains perfect, passionate and magical without effort.

  • Later versions show Cupid replaced by the archangel St Michael and Adam and Eve with the Tree of Knowledge and the serpent. Innocence before the temptations of desire and gratification.

  • In modern times the card has taken on a more romantic theme. Exhilaration and joy when finding that someone special, whom we feel is our soulmate.

The Lovers’ appearance in a reading can indicate a new lover or the deepening of an existing relationship. The card was originally called “Love”. In this context the card would tell you to trust your instincts when choosing a partner, career, something or someone your are strongly drawn to - no matter how challenging or scary.

Sometimes you are faced with true desires rather than duty. A dramatic change of attitude will result in happier times. A decisive point has been reached and you must choose.

When reversed: The The Lovers can indicate an unhappy love affair, separation and emotional loss

By accepting and giving love to ourselves and giving our love freely to others, our life will be balanced and whole. It is then that we can draw love to ourselves by manifesting happier relationships in personal, family and business life.

Ask and trust in The Universe to bring about your heart’s desire.
Do so with the highest intent.
