The Hierophant, also called the Pope or High Priest, number V of the major arcana cards, refers to a Master. A Holy Man, who, by the studies of Natural Law, can reveal the secrets of life and our links as human beings with cosmic energies.

A wise teacher full of esoteric and occult knowledge. He is ruled by Taurus the Earthly bull. Not a sign we would naturally associate with a Holy Man, until we understand that the Hierophant's purpose is to bring spiritual matters down to Earth.

He is the male counterpart of the High Priestess. Whereas she is concerned with intuition and realms beyond this Earth, he deals with moral law and worldly problems.

His power, however, is spiritual and he is a wise and capable advisor, forgiving and comforting of our human frailties.

Reversed: he is indicating that you are receiving bad advice or not listening to your instinct and intuition

When we act against these inner voices, we are ignoring the cosmic knowledge that is known to our 'higher selves'. The outcome, therefore, is often flawed and we find ourselves frustrated that our stubbornness and bullheadedness does not bring about the desired result.

The Hierophant symbolizes a connection to the divine order of things where we can seek answers and solve our problems. All that is required is to bring them down to Earth by seeking satisfactory solutions.
