The Devil is a figure, usually male, half-man and half-animal. He squats above two humans, male and female slavishly chained or strapped to a stone pillar. He is the bearer of disaster and misery, connected with lust and greed, temptation and addiction to materialism, ruling the physical body and senses, recognizing nothing other than pleasure for its own sake. If left out of control it will lead to degradation, apathy, depression and loss of spirit.

This card also represents blindness and misconception. The black background is the lack of light or understanding. By acknowledging and accepting our own darkness within we learn to do things in moderation and allow the light to overcome the darkness.

Reversed: This can be the beginning of freedom, the light at the end of the tunnel, you are enslaved only because you allow it. With belief in your freewill, you can choose to overcome bad habits and addictions. If in a relationship, this card can warn against obsession, domination and people that are not good for us. Listen to your 'inner voice', your 'intuition' and release your chains before you become enslaved.

As a person, the Devil can represent a man of power and money. He may be aggressive, domineering and controlling whilst also charming and persuasive. If the Querent is drawn to such a man, remind them that they allow themselves to be chained.

It is necessary to maintain your self respect and remove yourself from enslavement. There is nothing wrong in enjoying passion, pleasure, and fulfilling your desires, if you maintain a loving relationship with others and yourself.
